چکیده

Intestinal crypts are invaginations in the connective tissue of the human intestine and are supposed to be the site in which tumors originate, starting from the alteration of certain genes and pathways [1]. Considering that, so far, only a partial characterization of the key features of intestinal crypts has been accomplished, the in-depth investigation of their structural and dynamical properties is of crucial importance, with particular regard to the emergence and development of colorectal cancer (CRC) [2]. The basic elements involved in the crypt dynamics and the morphology of the crypt are shown in Figure 1.

Multiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory

A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...

Multiscale modelling of intestinal crypt organization and carcinogenesis

Colorectal cancers are the third most common type of cancer. They originate from intestinal crypts, glands that descend from the intestinal lumen into the underlying connective tissue. Normal crypts are thought to exist in a dynamic equilibrium where the rate of cell production at the base of a crypt is matched by that of loss at the top. Understanding how genetic alterations accumulate and pro...

Investigating the relation between stochastic differentiation and homeostasis in intestinal crypts via multiscale modeling

Colorectal tumors originate and develop within intestinal crypts. Even though some of the essential phenomena that characterize crypt structure and dynamics have been effectively described in the past, the relation between the differentiation process and the overall crypt homeostasis is still partially understood. We here investigate this relation and other important biological phenomena by int...

Heterogeneity of the Level of Activity of Lgr5+ Intestinal Stem Cells

Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are a group of rare cells located in the intestinal crypts which are responsible for the maintenance of the intestinal homeostasis and intestinal regeneration following injury or inflammation. Lineage tracing experiments in mice have proven that ISCs can repopulate the entire intestinal crypt. It is noteworthy that in such experiments, only a subset of intestinal cr...
